This newspaper article is an abridged version of an article which appeared in The Daily Times-News in Burlington, NC, on November 24, 1942.  The article details Dewey's military service, as well as the service of his brother, Sergeant Clemont V. (Pete) Hooper, who was serving in the U.S. Army.  Such newspaper briefs about service members were very common during the Second World War.

After being commissioned Dewey was assigned to a bomber squadron, the 400th Bombardment Squadron, which moved to Hawaii in September 1942.  By the time the article was published in November, Hooper's squadron had deployed to the South Pacific theater and was stationed at an airfield called Iron Range in Queensland, Australia.
