Elon College

After attending NC State, Dewey Hooper transferred back to Elon, where he was a member of the Kappa Psi Nu Fraternity and was in the Photography Club.  An avid photographer, he took many photographs of Elon and classmates and possessed several manuals for cameras and film.  In addition, he was the college’s movie projectionist, and was a member of the Student Christian Association (SCA).

The images below are from the Phi Psi Cli Yearbook of Elon College.  The first shows him as a freshman in 1937 (first picture, second row).  After transferring to NC State for two years, he returned to Elon.  The second image shows him as a junior in 1939 (first picture, third row).  The third image shows him as a senior in 1940, and includes his senior tribute and superlatives.  Click on the thumbnails to see larger images of the pages.

Dewey's senior tribute in the 1940 Phi Psi Cli yearbook not only comments on his quiet nature and ability to get things done, but also his mechanical and scientific prowess—qualities that no doubt prepared him to be a teacher but would also contribute to his selection for pilot training.  Dewey graduated from Elon in May 1940 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
