Teaching

Upon graduation, Dewey went into the field of education.  According to the letter written by his siblings,

“Dewey chose teaching as a profession, for that gave him the opportunity to share the values and principles that he himself practiced and held dear.”

He received his High School Teacher’s Certificate, Class A, from the NC Department of Public Instruction on September 17, 1940.  Certified to teach science and math, the young Elon alum taught at Central High School in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, North Carolina, during the 1940-1941 school year.  He taught algebra, chemistry, and physics.
