Professor James P. Elder Jr.

One of the Liberal Arts Forum's central figures was Elon graduate and Professor James P. Elder Jr. After proposing the establishment of a Liberal Arts forum during his time in the student legislature, Elder graduated from Elon in 1960. However, this was not the end of Elder’s extensive involvement in the Forum, and in 1963 he returned to Elon as a member of the History faculty.

After his return to Elon in 1963, Professor Elder served as the Forum’s faculty advisor until his departure in 1973. During this time, he was voted Outstanding Professor five times and contributed greatly to the Forum’s organization, fundraising appeals, and efforts to secure guest lecturers. In 1983, Elder was named that year's Outstanding Alumnus.
